Massive open online courses (MOOC) are online courses designed for a large number of participants to create and apply the necessary platforms with certain possibilities. Since Moodle is among the most commonly used e-learning system, the question is to measure functionality of this system and to check if they satisfy the criteria for the MOOC platform. The goal of this thesis is to disfigured on the shortcomings of Moodle as a MOOC platform. The concept and basic characteristics of MOOC are explained, examples of MOOC platforms in Europe and the world are given, and the most famous MOOC platforms are singled out and described. To identify the shortcomings of Moodle as a MOOC platform, the comparison between Moodle and edX features are made, as one of the most used MOOC platforms in the world. Features used to compare platforms are: UX and UI (User eXperience and User Interface), functionality, communication, multimedia support and the possibility of installing additional tools, the possibility of using the systems across multiple platforms, analytics within the system, evaluation, grading and certification and the ability to pay for courses. The results of the analysis in this thesis give an insight into the need to upgrade the Moodle e-learning system in order to be used as a MOOC platform.
