Abstract (english) Given that plastic pollution is considered one of the most dangerous environmental problems of the 21st century, microplastics are obviously a major environmental problem, as they are formed by the fragmentation of plastic. Marine organisms, such as fish, can ingest microplastics, which is a problem since humans are at the end of the food chain. Due to the issue of microplastics, the aim of this paper was to study and systematize data from the literature on the number and quantity of microplastic particles in marine organisms according to the groups of algae, seagrasses, invertebrates and vertebrates. Due to the (im)practical and (im)precise nature of sample collection, less data is available on microplastics in algae and seagrasses than on microplastics in marine invertebrates and vertebrates. Although various types of microplastics can be found in algae and seagrasses (varying from 13.5 µm to 5000 µm), fibers are still most often found on them. From the 16 analyzed papers related to microplastics in marine invertebrates, it was evident that fibers are the most common forms of microplastics by particle shape, and they were found in various sizes varying from 3 μm to 5000 μm. Of the 22 analyzed papers related to mircoplastics in marine vertebrates, 6 papers were focused on marine mammals, 1 paper was focused on marine reptiles (ie sea turtles), while the other 15 papers were related to mircoplastics in fish. It was evident that the most abundant forms of microplastics in marine vertebrates were fragments and fibers, and the size of these particles varied from 1 μm to 5000 μm.
