Abstract
Zbog rješavanja općeg problema narušene ravnoteže između stalnog materijalnog rasta te učuvanja i opstanka okoliša, prirodne osnove življenja, opstanka ljudi i opstanka društva razvila se potreba za održivim urbanim razvojem kao preduvjetom za stvaranje održivog grada. Osnovna hipoteza rada glasi da održivi gradovi pridonose implementaciji koncepcije održivog razvoja kroz ostvarivanje gospodarskog rasta i uĉinkovitosti, brigu o očuvanju okoliša i bioraznolikosti, te osiguravanju stanovnicima dostojne kvalitete života. Glavni cilj rada je ispitati i utvrditi mogućnost primjene temeljnih indikatora održivog razvoja u gradovima. Svrha rada je unapređenje kvalitete ljudskog života u gradovima primjenjujući načela održivog razvoja. U radu se nastoji kontinuirano držati linija ukupne održivosti te su slijedom toga prikazani osnovni pravci djelovanja u cilju dostizanja održivog razvoja u gradovima. Također, prikazani su rezultati istraživanja provedenog metodom anketiranja kako bi se utvrdilo u kojoj mjeri gradovi u Republici Hrvatskoj primjenjuju koncepciju održivog razvoja.

Solving common problems of imbalance between ongoing material growth and environmental conservation and preservation, the natural basis of life, the survival of the people and the survival of the society has developed a need for sustainable urban development which is a precondition for the creation of a sustainable city. A thesis hypothesis is that sustainable cities contribute to the implementation of the concept of sustainable development through the achievement of economic growth and efficiency, care for the environment and biodiversity, and ensuring a decent quality of life for residents. The main objective of this thesis is to examine and evaluate the usefulness of the basic indicators of sustainable development in cities. The purpose of this thesis is to improve the quality of human life in the cities applying the principals of sustainable development. The thesis seeks to continuously hold the line of three pillars of sustainability and, subsequently, presented the main directions of action in order to achieve sustainable development in cities. The thesis shows results of research conducted through the method of a survey questionnaire, to determine if cities apply the concept of sustainable development.
