Abstract

Old age is the final stage of adult life in which the world of employment is left behind and one becomes a senior citizen. All developed countries are faced with the trend of accelerated aging of population and decreased number of children per family. It is expected that the changes in demographic structure will have significant impact of tourism movement which will be sought in future decades. Researching elderly people could provide information for development of quality tourism product which would be adapted to this group. Goal is to research whether elderly people experience identity crisis or despair. Subjects who have achieved sense of integrity feel whole, complete and satisfied with their achievements. They have accepted achievements and disappointments which are unavoidable part of life. 50 people have taken part in the research, aged 64-86. Results show that almost all subjects have named members of the family as people who most contributed to their development. Events they consider significant in life are births of children and grandchildren, wedding, education, employment, as well as a loss of someone close. Physical, psychic and social changes that affected them are loss of functional competence, presence of illness, dementia and loss of someone close. When asked if their life expectations have been met, more than 90% of subjects stated that their expectations have been completely fulfilled. Subjects view death as a natural process or an unavoidable part of life. Only two subjects feel fear. Most elderly people in this research have integrated views on their own life and do not show despair.
