Abstract Pitka voda je strateški resurs u suvremenom svijetu. Potrebe za vodom rastu s porastom broja stanovništva i potrebom gospodarskog razvoja a s druge strane razni oblici onečišćenja ugroţavaju taj resurs. Promjene u distribuciji, izobilju, i kvaliteti vode u ovom stoljeću predstavljaju stratešku prijetnju kvaliteti ljudskog ţivota i odrţivosti okoliša.
Abstract (english) Freshwater is strategic resource in the modern world. Demands for water grow with the increase in number of population and with the need for economic development, but on the other side various forms of pollution threaten this resource. Changes in the distribution, abudance and quality of water in this century represent a strategic threat to the quality of human life and the enviromental sustainability. Water is mainly used for power supply in agriculture, households and industry. A number of changes in consumption, such as increased consumption of meat, the construction of large houses and buildings, the increasing use of small and large devices that use energy, usually include increased water consumption for production and for use. Corporate giants, private investors and corrupt governments are fighting for control of our scarce water supplies, which of course provokes protests, lawsuits and numerous revolutions by people who are fighting for essential rights. Privatization became part of the government strategy and global financial institutions. There are many dry areas of the world where even today people every day are in search of fresh water. Croatia, however, belong to the group of countries that have above-average supplies of water, and where water issues are not limiting factor of development. But of course, that does not mean we do not have to worry about the future and act wisely in managing. The importance of water in our lives is huge and each of us has an important role in shaping the future of life on earth.
