The written word in Croatia is part of the total cultural history of Croatia. Croatians have crafted their written culture and literature through the centuries in three scripts – Glagolitic, Latin and Croatian Cyrillic and in three languages - Croatian, Old Slavic and Latin. Nations or communities that have preserved their own written word possess a great cultural wealth and cultural identity. The written word testifies to the passing of time in the history of man and society and does not allow the disappearance of events, thoughts and customs. The importance of the written word lies in its role as the observer of events that occur within a community in all the spheres of life as well as the observer of the destinies of the people who participate in the events. It is the thread that connects past and present, but also present and future. Despite global influences, it is very important not to abandon one’s national cultural identity solely to the globalized time we live in and to take important measures at the national and local levels to protect and preserve our cultural identity.
