Personality disorders do not belong to typical psychiatric diagnoses as other psychiatric diseases. Personality disorders are dominated by certain personality traits. Normal traits become dominant and extremely expressed, to that measure that persons become dysfunctional and less strong when it comes to adapting to society, which consequently leads to problems in interpersonal relationships. In that sense, we can talk about personality disorders. Throughout history the issue of the difference between normal and pathological personalities has been raised. There are two approaches in establishing the personality disorder diagnosis and they are MKB-10 and DSM-5. To make the right diagnosis is important for all diseases, and therefore for personaliy disorders, too. Consequently, it is important to modify the approach to come to the right treatment. Various psychiatric methods are recommended for personality disorders. Psychotherapy as the most significant method has the best results when it comes to treating the disorders, whereas pharmacotherapy which is prescribed along psychotherapy supports the treatment of other accompanying comorbidities. Not only psychiatrists, but also nurses at the psychiatric department, play an important role in the treatment of persons suffering from those disorders. The right approach, and the understanding of potential nursing, but also medical, problems can highly contribute to their prevention and treatment.
