Nowadays, depression is among the leading public health problems both in the world and in Croatia. According to the World Health Organization, its further increase is predicted. According to research, depression occurs more often in women than in men. Various factors influence the onset of depression. Timely recognition of the diagnosis and treatment has a great impact on the quality of life of people suffering from depression. Treatment can be carried out with antidepressants and/or psychotherapy Nurses have an important role in reducing stigmatization, as well as in improving the quality of life of depressed people. Depression has a great impact on a person's functioning in everyday life. Impaired functioning in the family, community, school, work, etc. A large number of suicides are committed by people suffering from depression. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an increase in the number of people suffering from mental disorders, so depression is leading among them. Health education from the youngest days and increasing the health literacy of society are key in promoting and preserving mental health.
