Tablelands gorje je nastalo od Velikog razvodnog gorja kojeg obuhvaća gotovo
neprekinuti niz visoravni različite širine od 50 do 160 km. Područje Snowy Mountains
ima najviši vrh na kontinentu, Mount Kosciusko visok 2.228 m, dok su u trećoj zoni
zapadne padine koje su plodne s bogatim nizinama uz rijeku što je i dovelo do
opsežnog kultiviranja. Četvrtu zonu predstavljaju zapadne ravnice koje obuhvaćaju
gotovo dvije trećine države.Kod hidrogeografskih obilježja valja istaknuti da je regija
dijelom okružena prirodnom granicom Tasmanskog mora koje se nalazi u Tihom
oceanu te da je Novi Južni Wales također i riječno područje, a najviše prosječne
temperature mora ljeti se kreću oko 25 °C a najniže oko 15 °C dok su zimi najviše
prosječne temperature mora oko 16 °C a najniže prosječne se kreću oko 7 °C.Iako
najveći dio Novog Južnog Walesa i Australije općenito čine pustinje i polusušne
oblasti, ona obuhvaća širok spektar prirodnih staništa, od planinskih vrhova do
tropskih kišnih šuma te se ubraja u jednu od regija sa najvećim biodiverzitetom. Zbog
starosti i, kao posljedica toga, niske plodnosti zemljišta, izrazito netipičnog rasporeda
voda i dugotrajne geografske izolacije, australski živi svijet je raznovrstan i
jedinstven.Prema Köppenovoj klasifikaciji klime najveći dio Novog Južnog Walesa,
zapadno od Great Dividing Range ima sušne tipove klime tj. pustinjsku klimu (prema
sredini kontinenta) te stepsku klimu. Prosječne temperature zraka varijaju od 24 to 29
°C po ljeti te 7 to 15 °C zimi.
Glavni grad Sydney ovdje dolazi do izražaja zbog brojnosti takvih mjesta. Osim
Sydneya važno je istaknuti i Aboridžinsku kulturu koja je ostavila svoje tragove te je
na taj način ostvaren dodatni turistički značaj kompletnog Novog Južnog Walesa.

Sydney je glavni grad australske savezne države Novi Južni Wales. Financijski,
prometno, kulturno, znanstveno i gospodarski Sydney je, uz Melbourne, jedan od dva
najvažnija grada u Australiji. Grad je omiljeno turističko odredište, a zbog svojeg
položaja, plaža i klime mnogo je puta biran kao najbolje odredište za život ili odmor.
Novi Južni Wales atraktivna je destinacija te stoga ne čudi činjenica kako godišnje tu
regiju posjeti preko 3 milijuna stranih te preko 25 milijuna domaćih posjetitelja.
Primjetna je tako izrazita dominacija domaćih posjetitelja u odnosu na strane, a
ukupan broj domaćih posjetitelja čak je 8 puta veći od broja stranih posjetitelja.
Primarni uzrok takvoj distribuciji posjetitelja može se pronaći u geografskoj
udaljenosti kontinenta Australije u odnosu na Europu i Sjevernu Ameriku, kontinente
čiji su rezidenti najskloniji putovanjima.Prema podacima Vlade Novog Južnog
Walesa, a nakon statističke obrade istih utvrđeno je kako je ključni razlog za posjetu
navedene regije „odmor“ te je on bio razlog posjete čak 56,7% posjetitelja Novog
Južnog Walesa. Novi Južni Wales sve je popularnija destinacija, a o tome svjedoči i
rastući trend u broju posjetitelja, noćenja te ukupnoj potrošnji.
U sklopu strategije razvoja turizma Novog Južnog Walesa osmišljen je te od 2012.
godine u primjeni akcijski plan koji ima za cilj usmjeriti razvoj turizma navedene regije
kako bi se na optimalan način valorizirala prirodna i ina bogatsva kojima regija
obiluje. Taj je plan dorađen i objavljen u Kolovozu 2018. godine te se zahvaljujući
potpisu i podršci premijerke regije Novog Južnog Walesa te ministra turizma, smatra
službenim dokumentom kojim je određena strategija razvoja turizma u narednih
