Milan Begović, born in 1876 in Vrlika, is one of the most prominent and prolific Croatian writers. He is an author of the multi-genre opus of literary works, which were performed and played on theatrical stages across the world throughout the 20th century. He worked extensively on his diversiform literary opus for almost a half of century, either from his own inspiration or by order. Among his other works, he wrote: a collection of love poetry Knjiga Boccadoro (1898), essays, critiques, a collection Male komedije, a novella Kvartet (1926), a novel Bez trećega, travel novels, plays such as Pustolov pred vratima, and famous libretto Ero s onoga svijeta. Besides writing, he also worked as a translator and editor of various anthologies and collections. In the middle of his literary and life interest were women, especially those with outstanding sensuality, self-consciousness, those craving for temptation, and eventually guided towards tragic fate. None of our playwrights has been played on so many international stages as Milan Begović.
