Abstract

Movement combined with music are of great value for children. They help evolve cognitive functions with students, motor skills and rhytmic abilities, and also help the growing of social skills. The subject of study for this thesis was the acceptance of work that involves the corelation of music, movement and dance with students of lower grades of elementary schools, seeing as students reacted well to projects that involved such corelations. The goal of this research was to examine how much the students of lower grades of elementary school really care for and are interested in music, movement and dancing. Dancing is considered to be a natural way of expressing oneself. This is why it is important to recognize the role that music, movement and dancing have in the physical, emotional, social and intelectual growth of every child. With that said, the hypothesis of this study was that the student will easily master basic movement patterns and will eventually make his own when in contact with dance music. Another hypothesis was that dancing and music will positively affect the way the student will anticipate following classes if they involve music and dancing. Various methods were used in order to make the study more successful. Methods such as talking and interviewing, taping, polls and demos. Whilst realizing the study a population of 120 students between the age 7 and 11 participated. Students of elementary schools Vladimir Nazor in Krnica and Frane Petrić in Cres. The first part of the study consisted of following and attempting to copy the authors dance routines to the songs Chihauha, Li La Lo, Rigga ding dong song and the Superman song which were played through a machine and the song Kad si sretan which was played on guitar by the author which the children sang along and danced to. The students easily mastered the moves seeing as they were pretty basic natural ones such as jumping, waving hands etc. This confirmed the first hypothesis. The second part of the study featured a poll of ten questions. All of the 120 students said that they liked this type of class which confirmed the second hypothesis. The study also showed that the students take up extra curricular activities such as folk groups, cheerleading, rhytmics, modern dances and similar activites all of which include dancing and music. The corelation of movement, music and dance is also supported by the Ministry of science, education and sports and is included as a possibility for elementary school programs.
