Climate changes are one of the biggest challenges of today, creating significant change in the environment and life on Earth. Nowadays, a large part of the money is allocated for research to predict the future state of climate change on Earth and to take appropriate measures in time. Oceans play an important role in protecting the Earth from climate change, but ocean warming and acidification are occurring, which affects the composition, structure, and function of ecosystems. Research in this area will improve our understanding of climate change as a driver of biological changes in marine ecosystems. In this study, the influence of climate change on the growth of the queen scallop Aequipecten opercularis, a commercially unavailable species in Croatia, was investigated. The impact of climate change on the growth of the queen scallop was monitored in four different tanks with 20 individuals per tank: a control tank (same conditions as in the surrounding seawater), a tank with an increased temperature by 2 ºC, a tank with a reduced pH value by 0.2 and a tank in which the combined influence of lowered pH and elevated temperature was tested. The results show that climate change does affect the growth of the selected species, and a statistically significant difference was obtained in meat yield (MY) (p=0.051), muscle index (AI) (p=0.0003), and gonadosomatic index (GSI) (p=0.0197), which showed a positive correlation with the increase in temperature. The condition index (IC) does not show a statistically significant difference (p=0.121) and the species A. opercularis shows adaptation to the tested conditions.
