In this seminar work historical development of forced hospitalisation has been presented together with its progress during history. Work is focused on law regulations of forced hospitalisation in Croatia. Foundations of development of todays forced hospitalisations are based on pre-scientific and scientific phase. In pre-scientific phase we can include period of Antic and Medieval Ages while scientific phase we can locate in 19th and 20th Century. Two events that marked history of development are formation of first psychiatric hospital in 15th Century, and French revolution 1789. that brought us significant changes, especially separation of church from state which has had positive impact on improving clinical psychiatry. Importance of forced hospitalisation in community has been added by law regulations. In Croatia, first regulation based on care of people with mental health issues is dated in 1856. When there was published and accepted Rulebook of admitting patients in psychiatric institutions. First serious law act focused on admitting mental health patients in psychiatric institutions has been published in 1997. by introducing Protection of Mental Health Patients Act. It is pointed that until then there was another law in use since 1934. – Law on non-litigation procedure, and Healthcare and insurance law from 1980. and 1993. Because of changes and addons in law, earlier mentioned act has been fully changed with new Protection of Mental Health Patients Act introduced on 13th of June 2014. Forced hospitalisation in Croatia is regulated with current Protection of Mental Health Patients Act (NN, 76/14). Terminology “Forced hospitalisation” has not been used in current Law for People with Mental Health Issues so it has been defined by author like: “Forced hospitalisation is forced admission of person with severe mental health issues in psychiatric institution who, because of issues itself, directly risks own or someone else’s life, health and security, and on whom is possible to use forced measure.” In Croatia, it includes patients with moderate or severe mental health issues. Apart from that, in this work there are also shown responsibilities and competencies of Nurses in care of Mental Health patients and principles of Mental Health Nursing and Ethics. Added, this work is focused on overview of nursing approach during forced hospitalisation and overview of nursing diagnoses.
